Mobile POS solutions are already a familiar part of customer transactions at ballparks and airports across the country, and now those same solutions are expanding into traditional retail outlets and restaurants. According to IHL Consulting, by 2015 more than 2.7 million tablets a year will be sold to retailers for use as mobile POS devices and consumer information tools. Consumers, already familiar with smartphone and tablet interfaces, are increasingly asking for more opportunities to use mobility solutions while they shop.
So, how can POS VARs take advantage of this opportunity? And, does mobile POS pose a threat to existing POS business? “Regardless of the application, industry, or market, users want a POS solution in their hand or in their pocket for immediate, convenient access,” says Gus Reid, VP of sales and marketing at Partner Tech. “The VAR needs to offer mobile versions of its current solutions as well as new, complementary mobile solutions. This is a very exciting opportunity.”

Boarding the Xpient Xpress
Xpient Solutions (Charlotte, NC) has streamlined its retail software for the quick-service and fast-casual restaurant markets and enlisted Partner Tech USA (Irvine, CA) as its exclusive hardware partner for the new product. Dubbed Xpient Xpress, this package targets independents and chains not requiring extensive system customization. Encompassing POS, inventory, scheduling, and back office, Xpient Xpress includes PA-DSS validated payment processing, conversational ordering, and special features such as allowing the system to convert to the counter operator’s language on log-in and changing language on the fly for the kitchen video system to accommodate the kitchen staff. It will be bundled with the high-power, all-aluminum PT-6215 and SP-800 POS terminals from Partner Tech USA.

Deeper Bench for Partner Tech
Somewhat quietly, Partner Tech USA (Irvine, CA) has put together an experienced team of POS sales, marketing, and channel executives, with an eye towards increasing the company’s visibility in North and South America. The process started last September with the hiring of Gus Reid as VP of Sales and Marketing. Reid will be familiar to many RRN.Com readers from his decade-long service as National Distribution Manager for Epson America, where he helped build one of the strongest channels in the industry. Following Epson, he worked with Wincor Nixdorf, Squirrel Systems, and Skywire Media, which supplies SaaS-hosted mobile marketing.
In short order, Reid has added two more players. Cindy Blankenship came onboard as Channel Sales Manager in November, with responsibility for advancing Partner Tech’s relationships with distributors, resellers, and ISVs. Prior to Partner Tech, Blankenship served for five years as Northeast Sales Manager for M-S Cash Drawer as well as similar positions at various POS and Auto ID resellers. She will be based out of Clearwater, Florida.
Then, last month, Partner Tech recruited Mike Forrest as its Director of Sales. Based in Boston, Forrest brings more than 25 years of involvement with many facets of POS. His resume includes Epson America, where he enjoyed success as Northeast Sales Manager for many years, TransAct Technologies, as VP of Sales for POS and Banking, and, most recently, Alpha Bay Corporation, the provider of retail management software.
